1. Memento (2000)

Christopher Nolan’s breakthrough remains one of the smartest psychological thrillers of the last quarter-century.

Guy Pearce plays Leonard Shelby, a man unable to form new long-term memories following a traumatic attack. He is searching for the man he believes murdered his wife. The problem is that every few minutes he can effectively lose track of what has just happened.

Leonard compensates with Polaroids, handwritten notes and tattoos permanently recording what he believes to be important facts.

Nolan then makes the audience experience some of that uncertainty by constructing much of the film backwards. Scenes begin before we understand what caused them. People Leonard trusts in one sequence may become suspicious when we encounter them earlier in the story.

That structure isn’t simply a gimmick. It places us inside the protagonist’s inability to know whether his understanding of reality can be trusted.

2. North by Northwest (1959)

Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest helped establish the template for countless thrillers that followed it.

Cary Grant plays advertising executive Roger Thornhill, who is mistaken for a government agent and dragged into a conspiracy he doesn’t understand. Suddenly he is being chased across America.

The film contains some of Hitchcock’s most famous sequences, including the crop-duster attack and the climax on Mount Rushmore, but its real strength is momentum.

Thornhill spends much of the movie trying to understand why people want him dead. That basic idea — the ordinary person accidentally entering a dangerous world — remains one of the thriller genre’s most effective engines.

More than sixty years later, the movie still moves remarkably quickly. It is currently listed as free on Plex.

3. End of Watch (2012)

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña play two Los Angeles police officers whose routine patrol work pulls them into something considerably more dangerous.

Director David Ayer uses handheld cameras, police footage and conventional filmmaking to create an unusually intimate view of the two officers’ lives.

The strength of End of Watch isn’t simply its crime plot. It is the friendship between Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala. Their conversations inside the patrol car make them feel like genuine partners long before the film begins increasing the danger around them.

That investment makes the thriller elements considerably more effective.

4. Enemy (2013)

Before Sicario and Dune, Denis Villeneuve directed this small, strange psychological thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal.

Gyllenhaal plays Adam, a university lecturer who spots an actor in a film who looks exactly like him. He becomes obsessed with finding his double.

That decision leads him into a story involving identity, sexuality, jealousy and a very memorable spider.

Enemy isn’t interested in providing a simple explanation for every image. Villeneuve creates a suffocating atmosphere and lets symbolism, repetition and ambiguity do much of the work.

5. Blood Star (2024)

Blood Star strips the road thriller down to a particularly simple situation.

A young thief is crossing the American desert when she is stopped by a small-town sheriff. The encounter initially appears to be routine harassment. Then she begins to understand that he has selected her.

The sheriff hunts women travelling alone, and his most dangerous weapon isn’t simply violence. It’s authority. He has a badge, a police vehicle and the ability to make other people believe his version of events.

What follows becomes a psychological and physical cat-and-mouse battle across empty desert roads.

Made independently with a small crew and shot in the desert, the film combines road thriller, survival horror, crime and desert noir.

Blood Star is currently available to watch free with ads on Tubi. Tubi describes the story as a thief trapped in a desert town trying to outsmart a sheriff who hunts women for sport.

Best for: Road thrillers, survival tension and independent genre films.

6. Lucky Number Slevin (2006)

Josh Hartnett plays Slevin, a man whose arrival in New York immediately places him in the middle of a conflict between two rival crime bosses. Unfortunately, both seem to think he owes them money.

Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley and Lucy Liu round out an unusually strong cast.

The movie belongs to the wave of stylish, twist-heavy crime thrillers that flourished in the early 2000s. Dialogue matters. Identity matters. And virtually everybody knows something Slevin doesn’t.

It is slick, playful and built around eventually revealing why all these apparently disconnected characters have ended up in the same story. Plex currently lists the film as available free.

7. The Final Cut (2004)

Robin Williams stars in a science-fiction thriller built around an excellent idea.

In the near future, some people are implanted at birth with devices that record everything they see and hear. After death, specialist editors assemble those memories into films celebrating their lives.

Williams plays Alan Hakman, one of these editors. His work requires him to examine people’s most private moments — including events their families never knew happened. Then he discovers something inside one man’s memories that creates a much larger problem.

The film mixes speculative science fiction with paranoia and questions about privacy, memory and who gets to control the story of a person’s life.

Best for: Concept-driven science fiction and psychological suspense.

8. Sinister (2012)

True-crime writer Ellison Oswalt moves his family into a house connected with a murder he intends to investigate. He doesn’t tell them why they are there.

Then he discovers a box of home movies. The footage appears to document a series of families being murdered.

Ethan Hawke gives the story credibility because Ellison isn’t simply a horror-film victim. He is ambitious. He wants another successful book. And even when he understands that something is badly wrong, that ambition makes walking away more difficult.

Sinister sits at the intersection of horror, mystery and psychological thriller, gradually moving from investigation toward something more supernatural. Plex currently lists it as available free.

9. The Ides of March (2011)

Not every thriller requires a murderer. George Clooney’s political drama proves that ambition, loyalty and information can be dangerous enough.

Ryan Gosling plays Stephen Meyers, a talented campaign strategist working for a Democratic presidential candidate played by Clooney. Stephen believes in the campaign. Then he begins learning things that challenge both his idealism and his understanding of the people around him.

The film becomes increasingly concerned with leverage. Who knows what? Who can reveal it? And what will somebody sacrifice to remain close to power?

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti are excellent as veteran political operatives who understand the game considerably better than the younger protagonist. Plex currently lists The Ides of March as free.

10. The Roommate (2011)

Sara arrives at college and meets her new roommate Rebecca. At first, Rebecca simply seems intense. Then her attachment to Sara becomes increasingly possessive.

Leighton Meester embraces the film’s obsessive-roommate premise, while Minka Kelly plays the increasingly alarmed object of her attention.

The result is an unapologetically glossy psychological thriller in the tradition of Single White Female. It doesn’t require elaborate conspiracy or supernatural explanation. The danger comes entirely from somebody refusing to accept the boundaries of a relationship.

11. The Black Demon (2023)

A family’s trip to an offshore oil platform becomes a survival nightmare when they encounter a gigantic shark.

Yes, this sits toward the creature-feature edge of the thriller genre. But The Black Demon uses its monster within a straightforward survival framework: isolation, dwindling options and a family trying to escape an environment where they have very little control.

Josh Lucas leads the cast. The film also folds environmental themes into its shark-movie premise, giving the threat a quasi-mythological dimension.

12. Match Point (2005)

Woody Allen’s Match Point begins as a relationship drama and gradually turns into something considerably darker.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays Chris Wilton, a former professional tennis player who enters an affluent British family through friendship and marriage. Then he begins an affair with Nola, played by Scarlett Johansson.

Desire becomes risk. Risk becomes desperation. And the second half of the movie increasingly resembles a Patricia Highsmith-style crime thriller.

13. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)

Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro return to the violent border world established in Sicario. This time, the story expands toward covert operations involving Mexican drug cartels and the U.S. government.

The film is more overtly action-oriented than Denis Villeneuve’s original, but it retains the same bleak sense that the people controlling events are operating within systems whose moral boundaries have become almost meaningless.

Del Toro remains the most compelling presence. His Alejandro can be frightening, sympathetic and unreadable within the same sequence.

14. Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Sometimes you don’t want subtle psychological dread. Sometimes you want terrorists to take over the White House.

Gerard Butler plays Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who finds himself inside the building during an attack. From there, Olympus Has Fallen essentially turns the White House into the setting for a Die Hard-style siege movie.

Antoine Fuqua directs with little interest in restraint. The film is violent, direct and built almost entirely around momentum. Plex currently lists it as free.

15. Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter’s Halloween is usually described as horror or slasher cinema, but its basic mechanics are pure suspense.

A killer returns to the quiet town of Haddonfield and begins stalking a teenage babysitter. Carpenter generates tension through framing and anticipation rather than constant violence. Michael Myers may simply be standing in the background of a shot. Then he is gone.

Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode gradually understands that the person she thought she saw isn’t imaginary.
