Before we meet Bobbie Torres, we see a young woman alone on a desert road at night, desperately trying to escape an approaching car. A man gives her a gun containing a single bullet and offers what appears to be one final chance to save herself.

What follows reveals immediately that the rules of this world are not what they seem.

The Opening of Blood Star

Wyomi Reed’s character is the first person the audience sees in Blood Star.

The sequence begins without explanation. A frightened woman stumbles along an empty desert highway while headlights approach behind her. She is exhausted, isolated and clearly already trapped inside a situation that has been unfolding long before the film begins.

The Sheriff gives her a gun and one bullet.

For a moment, the audience is encouraged to believe that the weapon might offer a way out. Instead, the sequence ends with a violent reversal that establishes Sheriff Bilstein not simply as a threat, but as someone who has turned the pursuit of his victims into a ritual.

The scene becomes the blueprint for the film.

Wyomi Reed as the First Victim

Reed has very little dialogue and limited screen time, which makes the performance almost entirely physical.

The audience needs to understand immediately that this woman has been running for some time. Her fear, exhaustion and desperation have to communicate a story we have never seen.

That was important because Blood Star does not explain the Sheriff before introducing Bobbie. Instead, the opening victim allows the audience to understand something that Bobbie does not: the man she is about to encounter has done this before.

From the moment Bobbie enters the story, we therefore know more than she does. Every apparently casual encounter with the Sheriff carries the memory of the woman on the road.

The First Victim and Sheriff Bilstein

The opening also introduces one of the central ideas behind Blood Star: Sheriff Bilstein does not simply kill his victims. He creates games around them.

The badge gives him authority, the desert gives him isolation, and the roads allow him to control the circumstances of each encounter.

By beginning with Reed’s character rather than Bobbie, the film reveals the outcome of one of those games before asking the audience to watch another begin.

Bobbie may initially believe she has simply encountered an unpleasant small-town sheriff. The audience already knows that she has entered the territory of a predator.

A Career Across Film and Television

Wyomi Reed is a Canadian actress and writer whose screen work includes feature films, television and independent productions. She is credited in Blood Star as the First Victim and has also appeared in major studio productions including Top Gun: Maverick and Netflix’s Spiderhead.

Her other work includes The Trade, while more recent film credits include Parable and Quiet.

From Top Gun: Maverick and Spiderhead to Blood Star

Reed’s credits span productions of very different scales.

She appears as a member of the Dark Star Battalion in Top Gun: Maverick, Joseph Kosinski’s blockbuster sequel, and is also credited as Heather in Spiderhead, the Netflix science-fiction thriller starring Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller.

In Blood Star, the scale is deliberately different.

There are no huge sets or elaborate action sequences. Reed is alone on an empty road, with darkness, headlights and the approaching Sheriff providing almost everything the sequence needs.

That simplicity is what makes the opening disturbing.

Why the First Victim Matters

Although Reed appears only at the beginning of Blood Star, the character remains present throughout the film.

When Bobbie later discovers evidence of the Sheriff’s previous victims, the opening sequence acquires a different meaning. The unidentified woman is no longer simply the victim of an isolated act of violence. She is part of a pattern.

The audience has effectively witnessed the end of one story before beginning another.

That structure creates an important question beneath Bobbie’s journey: can she become the first woman to break the cycle?
