This list is not based purely on Netflix’s popularity chart. A film being watched by millions of people does not necessarily make it one of the best thrillers available on the platform.

We consider filmmaking quality, performances, suspense, originality, reputation within the genre and how strongly the film delivers on the experience somebody searching for a thriller is actually looking for. We also deliberately mix established films and newer Netflix releases — somebody searching for “the best thrillers on Netflix right now” is usually trying to find a good film to watch, not necessarily the newest film Netflix wants to promote.

Looking for Another Thriller? Watch Blood Star

If you have worked your way through Netflix’s psychological and crime thrillers and want to discover something outside the usual streaming recommendations, Blood Star is an independent desert road thriller built around one young woman, one predator and an increasingly dangerous journey across the American Southwest.

Bobbi is travelling alone when she attracts the attention of a small-town sheriff. The encounter initially resembles the kind of uncomfortable traffic stop most drivers would simply want to get through and forget. Gradually, it becomes clear that the man behind the badge is a predator who has learned how to use his authority as camouflage. That changes the normal relationship between victim and law enforcement — Bobbi cannot simply turn to the police because the person she should be able to trust is the person pursuing her.

The film combines the road menace of The Hitcher and Duel, the desert isolation of No Country for Old Men, the institutional threat found in corrupt-cop thrillers and the escalating predator-versus-prey structure of a survival film. Unlike many modern streaming thrillers built around complicated conspiracies or large casts, Blood Star deliberately keeps the central dramatic idea stripped back: what happens when someone in authority decides to use that authority against you?
